Spring 2024

"Balcony, Backyard" is a painting-based sculptural installation focusing on a nuclear family following the 2008 financial crisis in the United States. It was completed the spring of 2024 during my residency at Fabrica Research Centre in Treviso, Italy. The project was exhibited during the Fabrica 30 event in July 2024 against the backdrop of Tadao Ando's historic library.

Each painting, a semiotic materialization blending the family's collective memories with objects from their home, highlights how a plummeting housing market left an indelible mark on the domestic sphere. The installation features oil paintings on canvas, set in ornate wooden picture frames. Accompanying these visuals is a short multi-character fiction work of the same title that follows the family's journey through this period. The boundaries constructed by the work reconstructs the complexity of familial kinship experienced between families bounded by a physical space.

Special thanks to graphic designer Maximilian Bufardeci for his work to design the booklet. Another thanks to photographer and sculptor Frederik Marks for his work to manufacture the exhibition plinths.
